A: Generally speaking, yes, massage therapy can be safe for most individuals. However, some individuals with particular medical conditions (e.g. deep vein thrombosis, severe osteoporosis, etc.) should consult a healthcare provider before getting a massage.
If you a have specific medical condition that you are unsure would be affected by massage therapy, you can consult with your chosen RMT and they can advise you if there may be any contraindications for massage therapy.
Q: What types of massage are available?
A: Common types include Swedish, deep tissue, sports, hot stone, and trigger point massage. Each has unique techniques and benefits tailored to the different needs and preferences of a client.
When you are booking a massage therapy treatment, be sure to check with your RMT to see if they offer a specific massage type/technique. If they do not, they may be able to refer you to another practitioner that performs the specific massage type/technique that you may be looking for.
Q: How often should I get a massage?
A: Frequency depends on individual needs and goals.
For general wellness or maintenance massage therapy, once a month may suffice.
For chronic issues or high stress, more frequent sessions, such as bi-weekly, may be beneficial.
It’s always best to consult with your RMT and together you can determine the best course of action for your massage therapy treatments.
Q: What should I expect during a session?
A: When going for a massage therapy treatment, a client can expect the following:
- A brief discussion/intake: this can include discussing your needs/wants from the massage therapy treatment, an explanation of the risks/benefits of receiving treatment, obtaining consent (either verbal or written) for treatment or for working on sensitive areas.
- The massage therapy treatment: this can include a variety of techniques applied to the soft tissue or joints of the body. Your therapist may also check in with you to ensure that you are comfortable for the duration of the treatment
- Post treatment discussion: this can include bringing up any questions or concerns you may have about the treatment/treatment plan with your therapist, your therapist providing you with self-care including stretches and/or exercises
Q: How should I prepare for a massage?
A: There are a number of different things a clients can do to prepare for a massage therapy treatment.
Staying hydrated before the treatment can be helpful. It may also be a good idea to arrive to your treatment 10-15 mins prior to the scheduled appointment time in order to fill out any forms.
Q: Are there any particular things I should be doing after my massage therapy treatment?
A: This depends on the type of treatment that you have had and what the therapist discusses with you post-treatment. If they give you a regimen of self-care (which can include stretches and/or exercises) be sure to ask for clarification if you need any.
Be sure to also discuss with your RMT what a follow up schedule would look like for any subsequent treatments.
You can also ask your RMT, to pre-book your follow up appointment in order to avoid disappointment of not getting an appointment if you try to book last minute.
